i read the whole orphan series. it doesn't get super heavy scifi in the first book, but the writing is still phenonimnal and what scifi there is really counts towards the story, like change or die type stuff. it's really great because you know how like star trek starts you where humanity has achieved this super space fleet already? well here you get to follow humanities ascent into the realms of scifi. one of the best military scifi series i've ever read.
