View Full Version : We're Alive podcast feed maintenance next week-
Kc

SO, next week there's no new episode. THAT, you should already know. What we're planning on doing is to do a little maintenance to our podcast feed and move things over to another tracking server.
We'll let you know when the update is occuring exactly, but I will keep you posted. We'll also need any help letting us know if and when things are broken for you.
Why are we moving? Better tracking data with libsyn, and also it gives us a better tracking system if and when feedburner ever goes down.

Podcast maintenance canceled. Turns out we are TOO BIG AND POWERFUL FOR LIBSYN!
But seriously, our podcast is over 2.6 gigs, and that would cost more than $75 a month for hosting alone at 1.5 gigs.
So, what we have will work for now. It ain't broke.

Well bite my tongue! This is still going to happen, later this week we'll test it out. SO, Dec 4th or 5th, we're going to test out a switch over. Should it affect you? No.
Is that the correct use of "affect or effect"... I hope so.

PHEW!
On a side note, to any users. We might need an extra hand to QC the new feed, make sure everything is there as it should be. Whenever we transfer from one server to another we have to re-upload and link the episodes. Sometimes that can cause weird issues. Anyway, if you can help us out, GREAT! Just post below and we'll let you know how to help once we switch.

I'll gladly help out, just let me know the details :)

We're working on the details, but the new main RSS is here: http://werealive.libsyn.com/rss
The feedburner address is going to still work, and libsyn is still working on syncing up everything, so there might be a few episodes currently offline. I love the amount of statistical data we'll be getting now.

Sure, just let me know what you would like me to do.

Once it's all synced, I'll post here. There might be some testing, because libsyn allows us to make an android app. Might use that, maybe.

Once I get the thumbs up, I'll give it a go on my Zune software.
I'm not using the device anymore now that I have a smartphone, but I still use it for PodCatching on my laptop because the interface is pretty good actually. I understand that the Zune architecture has actually been re-purposed into the X-Box and Windows phones... if I encounter an error, that may be indicative that the other platforms might too.

Alright, everyone. Here's where I need your help. Can you check this feed, and look for any and all errors?
http://werealive.libsyn.com/rss
All the episodes should be in sync now. By errors, check for any mislabeled links, missing episodes, etc. Once we go live I'd hate to have to wait to fix something. I've done my best to check everything, but sometimes other eyes help significantly.
Thanks so much!
UPDATE: Episode page is updated for Libsyn:
http://www.zombiepodcast.com/episodes/
Just one more area to check for errors.
Update 2: Main feed switching over.
Update 3: LIBSYN IS Up!!!! Looking great! I now have real-time statistics of downloads and it's far more accurate. There might be some people on old feeds that didn't track properly, so we killed the old source server. MOST everyone won't notice any difference, but there might be a few left over that need updating.
PLEASE let me know of any issues you might see regarding the feed. There's still some little things we're looking into to optimize some of the features from libsyn.
Cheers!

I'm currently getting a "Marketplace Unavailable" error with the Zune Software, but I went ahead and copy/pasted the feed url through the manual add a podcast function.
(Did find a small problem, maybe? See below update.)
The default settings are to download and keep three episodes and once Zune did its thing, it picked it up more or less right away and started downloading the most recent three, Chapter 40. I'm listening to 40 1/3 now as I type this... so, it seems everything is good to go so far. I changed the settings and I'm downloading them all to check. To the best of my recollection, there doesn't seem to be any difference so far. Zune doesn't seem to mind the duplicate title either, I now have two copies of WA: one from the old feed and one with the new.
Here's a screen cap of what I'm seeing:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/jasmith101/Zunetest_zpscb9e5240.png (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jasmith101/media/Zunetest_zpscb9e5240.png.html)
Two things:
1) In the right sidebar, should I bee seeing more text? I scanned through the episodes and earlier eps have more, more recent less.
2) Note that in the left, one of my Skeptics Guide Podcasts is giving me an error, (yellow circle exclamation mark) I'm happy to say that that's NOT happening with the new WA feed.
UPDATE: Market place is up, get a load of where you feature under entertainment; view all:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v180/jasmith101/Zunetest2_zps3fe0e0e8.png (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/jasmith101/media/Zunetest2_zps3fe0e0e8.png.html)
I clicked through and it told me that I'm subscribed... though it seems to be that it's the old feed. A great many older episodes have error messages listed by them. This is mirrored in my collection under the old WA entry. I double checked the new feed, the one I entered manually, and there are no errors, it is flawless.
Unfortunately, due to the vast changes taking place with the Marketplace (http://www.xbox.com/en-US/Live/Partners/Zune), points and XB1, the web links for the errors are dead. It does seem that the marketplace has the old feed.
The error code is C101001F (800C2EE7), with a manual search it tells me THIS (http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-music/errors/error-code-c101001f).
Cause
This error typically happens when a podcast subscription is no longer available from the Zune Marketplace or when there’s a problem with your network.
Well, I have no network problem. I just did a fresh download of the entire show with the new feed. (Finished while writing.)
Nutshell version: Works fine with Zune when you subscribe manually. Marketplace has old feed.

I've noticed on the "Listen" tab on the main page that there seems to be a few episode missing. I've compiled a list:
Chapters 1-3, 2-1, 4-3, 5-2, 7-1, 9-1, 10-1, 11-1, 11-3, 16-1, 17-1, 18-1, 22-1, 23-1, 25-2, 29-2, 31-2, 32-2, 33-2, 34-2, Season 3 recap, 37-3, 39-3.
Assuming it to be a glitch on my end, I refreshed the page a few times but keep getting the same result. I myself am totally unaffected by this because my downloaded content is still complete, I just thought I would bring it up in case the problem arises elsewhere.

Oh crap! I just saw that too. I need to fix that.
EDIT: It's a libsyn thing. Crap. They need to fix it. In the meanwhile, I turned back on the old player.

I'm working with them. Apparently they need it encoded properly, but no fixes yet.

While everyone else has been busy counting down the days to Christmas, we've all been counting down the days to the next episodes. I've even marked the days on my advent calendar :)

The libsyn streaming player is up again on the listen page. The episodes are there, but when I first published one this morning, it had issues. I contacted libsyn and they're looking into it. For now, I'll leave the high quality player up and running.

Got it. I'll see if Rob can refresh the Zune feed.
Seems fine now...
Today, with the new episode, for experiment's sake I "deleted" (moved the WA podcast folder) and unsubscribed/deleted both of the feeds, resubscribed directly through the Marketplace and did another fresh download of the series. I WAS getting the error messages I mentioned before, but as the download cycle got to the episodes bearing the error, it blinked out and the episode DL'd fine anyway.
As you know, I can only test with the Zune software but since they all refer to the same servers, it seems that Legacy Zune, Marketplace, Windows Phone, 360 and XB1 should all be good to go. I think that the Marketplace is also integrated a little more deeply into Windows 8 too... at least that's how I think it works.
(With any luck, I'll get to test all of these for you after tomorrow night's drawing.):omgomg:
As an aside, I'm using the iPP (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itunestoppodcastplayer.app) Podcast Player on my Android smartphone. "They" say that iPP refers to/uses the iTunes Podcast library. Today's episode downloaded fine as well. (Though something weird did occur during the switch that I noticed later, it downloaded a second copy of Ch. 40 3/3.O_o)
