View Full Version : The Short Film Thread! NWS

I know there are more than a few film students lurking around here (or in the cast . . . cough . . . cough) so I figured it was high time we got a short film thread going. You don't have to have any connection to the shorts you post, but it would be nice if you could provide a link to the director's website or project website. I think it's an artform that's worth investing your time and appreciate in. Most people think short films are for kids, and wannabe filmmakers, but that just isn't the case. They're a difficult-to-master art, as I'm sure many of you will have witnessed over the years. But there are some absolutely amazing films out there which most people will never see because they generally don't pop up at your local Monsterplex Cinema Chain.

So let's get the ball rolling!

First up, an award winning-perfomance by Emma Caulfield! It's an award winning film by Paul Bickel called Hollow. Enjoy!

I think we can safely assume--at the outset of this thread--that if you're watching movies at work, you probably shouldn't. I'm going to issue a Not Work Safe warning for the thread on the whole. While I would discourage anyone posting something that violates the terms of service you agree to when you join (no nudity, sex acts, child pornography), there is a chance that what you're going to see in this thread is not suitable for viewing by all ages, i.e. films containing a strong horror element. I would respectfully request you consider following a general code of conduct when making your selections.

Let's try and avoid the "art is subjective" when justifying what we're posting and keep the tits covered, and the children fully clothed.

Interesting that you should bring this up, I just spent a day going down the rabbit hole that is BlackBoxTv on YouTube. It's an amalgamation of YouTube stars brought together by a single Channel. It is more of the Sci-Fi/Horror genre. So if you're into that sort of thing, go for it. I'll link the short film "Proxy: A Slenderman Story" as an example of what they go for, although it is a separation from their usual director. If you want something quick and a little spooky, go for their 'F**k You Wednesday' or 'BlackBox presents' videos. If you want a longer, arcing story go for the 'Silverwood,' story.

Be warned, it is Not Safe for Work.

This may or may not have been posted before, but it definitely belongs here, as it may be one of the best short films you'll find online. Visually it is beautiful to look at, stylistically speaking it stands up against anything you'll watch in a theater, and is--in my own estimation--a far cry better than most budgeted zombie films.

I don't need to suck this films balls any more than I already have, it speaks for it self. However, I will stress that the following film contains some incredibly violent images, though nothing worse than you will see in a typical episode of The Walking Dead. Lady and gentlemen, I give you . . .

A nameless survivor is bitten and infected with the virus, a beautiful gift to the world. With only 2 HOURS to find the missing survivors, he must move quickly before the virus spreads too far.

This no-budget short film was shot entirely on a single Canon T2i with only two lenses and a skeleton crew of just three people. The film was made over the course of about two years.

Here's one that some of you may not know (Hipster!). It's called 'Long Branch', it was featured as a Staff pick on Vimeo. It's a short, romantic almost-comedy that features Alex House from the cult-hit TV show, 'Todd and the Book of Pure Evil'.

Long Branch (http://vimeo.com/47946872)

P.S. Todd and the Book of Pure Evil also began as a short film. Found here. (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/51092)

P.P.S. Thanks to turbo for reminding me about this with his mention of Vimeo.

Being a huge fan of the book of pure evil--which is what I am--I will absolutely watch this. Long live Atticus!

Just watched it, and cot damn. It was beautiful. Predictable and sappy and funny and sweet, but beautiful.

It's got a nice look to it. Really good job with the editing. Feels like a music video without the music, but I liked it.

Yea it is powerful, and tells a good story.

There is a bunch from another guy I'll post that does short films to go with certain songs.

I just watched a film called Lovely Monster by Francesco Calabrese and really enjoyed it. It's about five minutes, but it's worth it just for the Husky Rescue song at the end.

Produced by Mybosswas "Lovely Monster" tells the true story of Sophia, a young woman dealing with a rare and very dangerous condition.

Here's an animated short called The Reward. It's done by students and I think it's cell shaded. It was so good that they're now in production of both a tv show and a video game.

Since I learned about "Blender" the first time, I got kind of hooked up with what the Blender-community does every now and then.

This one is the most recent movie:

And there are many more movies available as well on this website:

Two of my favorites I link in the next two messages ...

Nice, Osiris!

I don't anything to offer (b/c I don't know shit about films in general, much less short films), but I'm enjoying some of the offerings there. Thanks to all who have contributed. :)
