View Full Version : The Never-ending Link Game v 1.0
Osiris
Feb 19th, 2013, 07:21 PM
Here's how it breaks down for those of you who haven't done it before.
Each player posts two words that go together, but he must use the second word that the last player posted and a new one of his own.
Example:
First "French Bread"
Second "Bread Pudding"
Third "Pudding Pop"
And so on . . .
Let's see how this works out, and carry on from Pop.
Pop Machine
Remember, just because it pops up in a google search does not mean it's a real collocation.

I was going to do this one but didn't think it qualified. To me it should be 2 seperate words otherwise no dice man. Nor should changing the tense, or from singular to plural, (or any of those other fancy grammatical words) etc,...Should be the word as previously given, no changes, so that's how I've been playing anyways.

I admit it: I am not very certain about the results. But I have seen several examples in which two words were provided, which actually could be connected to one word either. So I raise the question here: Is it valid to split a one word into two parts in order to go on with the game? Then happenstance would be a valid option; if not, I am sorry for failing - yet again ...
All the best!

i would think yes, so long as the two words are actual words. for instance, if the word was actual, actual ize would not be valid, but actual eyes would :D i'm just kidding about actual eyes, but hey, that could be another concept we could explore for the game, breaking down the word into two words that when said together form the word.
for instance: to actualize
the next word would be: actual eyes
the next word would be: eyes open
so you could play it straight, or where you can, you could break words, as above.

We seem to be spinning off into words that don't actually "go together," in favour of words that you can string together in a sentence.
Book banned?
Addiction Kills?
Kills Rule?
It's starting to get a little out there, so let's try and bring it back in to words that actually go together as opposed to words you can string together in the context of a sentence.
Examples again for the unclear:
Blueberry Muffin
Muffin Pan
Pan Flute
Flute Player
etc.
With a few exceptions you guys are nailing it, but when you reach a word that you can't fit against another, throw the points at the person who came up with it, and let them start fresh. :)

Just for clarification "Tag button" as you'd use on facebook ok? Can you give an example of one that doesn't fit the rules?
Would totally fit the rule, yes. It's two words that create the name of an object, so absolutely. Button Tag would be a little more borderline because it makes almost no sense at all.
So I'll go with:

You guys realize that what we're doing with this game is playing with collocations, right?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collocation
Like: "He was about to commit ______________________"
So you know that what would most likely go in the blank next would usually be something bad:
commit murder
commit adultery
commit crimes, etc.
But one would not commit marriage... that just wouldn't go together.
Love 'dem word games!

Why do I have a different association with the word "Schwarzkopf"?
http://goodlogo.com/images/logos/schwarzkopf_logo_2888.gif
Schwarzkopf means black head in German.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/thumb/e/e0/Schaumpon.JPG/800px-Schaumpon.JPG
And I guess Schaumpon (foamy-pon?) was has been the term used before it was replaced by 'shampoo'.

YABC: I guess, back then, when Mr General Schwarzkopf ruled 'em forces in the war against Iraq you had other things on your agenda.
About the impersonator ...
Is this valid:
Impersonator class (like for example in acting schools)?

I was thinking of a celebrity-look-alike; an entertainer who looks enough like someone famous to portray them at parties, or special events. I have a friend who has a business providing celebrity impersonators. I doubt that he has a General Schwarzkopf in his stable right now, but he has several Schwarzenegger Impersonators and a Heidi Klum Impersonator.
