To have empty shelves in my library, or to have empty shelves with old cobwebs covered with dust in my library ...

The latter... For any reader who loves books its the latter, unless those shelves contain books with dust and cobwebs and the pages are so brittle they can't be turned.

You should just bring in a bunch of old books from home, stock the shelves, and leave them for whoever wants to check one out.
